As the winter season approaches, the Sikkim Police have launched a major road safety initiative aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring the safety of travelers during the cold and foggy months. The initiative, which began on January 2, 2025, focuses on addressing the specific challenges posed by winter weather conditions, such as reduced visibility, slippery roads, and the increased risk of accidents.

The road safety campaign includes the installation of additional road signs, especially in high-risk areas, and the deployment of more patrols on major highways and mountainous roads. Officers have been trained to monitor road conditions more closely, with a particular emphasis on spots prone to accidents, such as sharp curves, steep inclines, and areas frequently covered in ice or fog.

Additionally, Sikkim Police are conducting public awareness programs to educate drivers about the risks of driving in winter conditions. Local schools and communities are being engaged in the campaign, with the police distributing safety guidelines and tips on how to stay safe while driving during the winter months.

One of the major parts of the initiative is the increased enforcement of traffic laws, particularly around seatbelt usage, speed limits, and safe driving practices in winter conditions. Police are also working closely with vehicle inspection authorities to ensure that vehicles, especially commercial ones, are winter-ready and equipped with essential safety gear.

The Sikkim Police are urging residents and visitors to take extra precautions while traveling during this time, including using appropriate tires for winter conditions and avoiding travel during heavy snowfall or poor visibility.
