A five-year-old boy, Gulsingh Harilal Ajnera, was tragically mauled to death by a lion after being dragged away from a farm in Amreli district, Gujarat. The incident occurred near Thordi village on Wednesday afternoon, and the child’s body was found about 100 meters away. Forest department officials quickly caged the lion and moved it to an animal rescue center.
The article notes that Amreli district is not a typical habitat for Asiatic lions, whose main home is Gir National Park. However, a May 2025 census revealed that lions are now found in 11 districts of Saurashtra, including Amreli, outside forested areas. The census also showed a significant increase in Gujarat’s Asiatic lion population, from 674 to 891 over the past five years, with 507 lions residing outside the Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary.
