Javed Akhtar Hails New Indian Music App as a ‘Major Milestone’ for Artistic Freedom

Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has praised the recent launch of a new music app, developed by prominent figures in India’s music industry, calling it a “major milestone” for Indian music. The app, introduced earlier this month, is designed to be a democratic platform that empowers singers, lyricists, and composers—offering them the creative liberty often restricted in the traditional film music ecosystem.

Bridging Two Worlds of Indian Music

Speaking at the launch event, Akhtar reflected on the divide between musicians in mainstream film music and those in classical or non-film genres. While their artistic journeys differ, he pointed out, they face a shared struggle—limited creative control.

“Film music is a commissioned job,” Akhtar explained. “Directors and producers provide the situation, and artists are expected to create within those boundaries. The final call rests with them—and rightly so—it’s their film and their vision.”

However, he emphasized that countless exceptionally talented classical and semi-classical artists often remain undiscovered or under-promoted because of market-driven barriers and lack of exposure.

“A Platform Without Boundaries”

According to Akhtar, the newly launched app offers a solution by creating a free, inclusive space where musicians can express themselves without commercial constraints.“For the first time, we have a platform where composers, lyricists, and singers can share their work without needing approval or validation from anyone else,” he said. “There is no committee, no interference—just pure artistic freedom.”

The initiative aims to break down industry barriers and encourage raw, unfiltered creativity, allowing artists from all backgrounds to connect directly with audiences on their own terms.

This groundbreaking move is expected to reshape the Indian music landscape, making room for diverse voices and innovative sounds beyond the realm of cinema.
