The issue of an airport at Basanthnagar had come to the fore in November last year, when Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy assured airports in Warangal, Ramagundam, Kothagudem and Adilabad.
The aspirations of locals for an airport in Basanthnagar, Ramagundam, have been crushed after Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu stated that the location is not feasible for development.
In response to a letter from Peddapalli MP G. Vamsi Krishna, the minister explained that apart from an existing airstrip, Basanthnagar lacks necessary infrastructure. A Techno-Economic Feasibility Report (TEFR) by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) determined that the site is unsuitable due to high hills obstructing flight approaches. Additionally, it falls within the restricted airspace of the Indian Air Force (IAF), extensively used for training by the IAF academy, requiring clearance from the Ministry of Defense.
