Home Minister Amit Shah, on Wednesday, launched a scathing attack on the Opposition, accusing them of opposing much-needed reforms in the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024. Addressing the Lok Sabha, Shah delved into India’s historical records, highlighting controversial land deals and property claims made by the Waqf Board across the country.
The BJP-led Centre has introduced the amendment bill with the aim of bringing greater transparency and accountability to the functioning of the Waqf Board, a body that oversees properties designated for religious and charitable purposes in the Muslim community. However, the Opposition has strongly resisted the proposed changes, leading to heated debates in Parliament.
During his speech, Shah emphasized the need to reform outdated policies and prevent unauthorized land acquisitions under the Waqf Act. He accused the Opposition of shielding vested interests instead of supporting measures that would ensure fair and legal management of these properties.
The Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, which has now been tabled, is expected to trigger further discussions and political confrontations in the coming days
