The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Delhi and surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) areas, warning that temperatures are expected to rise sharply starting tomorrow. The region, which has already been experiencing rising daytime heat, is likely to see temperatures climbing above 44°C in the coming days.
According to the IMD forecast, dry northwesterly winds and clear skies are likely to push temperatures to heatwave levels, especially during the afternoon hours. Areas like Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad are also expected to be affected by this extreme weather condition.
What is a Heatwave?
A heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature exceeds 40°C in the plains and is 4.5°C to 6.4°C above normal for two or more consecutive days. With temperatures expected to cross these thresholds, the weather office has advised people to take extra precautions.
Health and Safety Advisory:
Authorities have advised residents to:
  • Stay indoors during peak hours (12 PM to 4 PM)
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
  • Avoid strenuous activities in direct sunlight
  • Use umbrellas, hats, or sunglasses when going out
  • Take extra care of children, elderly, and pets
Hospitals have also been put on alert to handle cases of heatstroke, dehydration, and exhaustion, which often surge during intense heatwaves.
Government Measures:
Local civic bodies and disaster management authorities are preparing for emergency responses. Water tankers and cooling stations may be deployed in certain vulnerable areas if conditions worsen. Schools and public places have been advised to ensure availability of clean drinking water and shade structures.
Outlook:
The heatwave conditions are expected to continue for 3–4 days, after which a slight drop in temperature may occur due to possible western disturbances or scattered pre-monsoon showers.
