Reactor Blast at Sigachi Industries Kills Dozens, Halts Operations

Pashamylaram, Telangana – On June 30, 2025, a massive explosion tore through the spray-dryer/reactor unit at Sigachi Industries Pvt Ltd’s pharmaceutical plant in Pashamylaram, Sangareddy district, approximately 50 km from Hyderabad. The blast triggered a catastrophic fire and structural collapse.

  • Fatalities and Injuries: Initial reports confirmed at least 12 deaths and 34 injured. By July 1, the death toll surged to between 34 and 36 as rescue teams recovered more victims from the rubble .

  • Rescue Efforts: Multiple agencies, including NDRF, SDRF, and 11 fire engines, were deployed. Teams worked round the clock dismantling debris and utilizing fire-fighting robots to recover bodies, some needing DNA identification.

  • Probable Cause: Officials suspect a chemical reaction or pressure buildup during the spray-drying process triggered the explosion in the reactor 

  • Corporate Response: Sigachi declared the facility fully insured, will pause operations for 90 days, and pledged full support to victims’ families via compensations, medical aid, and insurance claims 

  • Government Action: Prime Minister Modi announced ₹200,000 compensation to families of the deceased and ₹50,000 to the injured . A state-led investigation panel was constituted, and the chief minister called for immediate relief & safety audits .

  • Aftermath: The tragedy has rattled investor confidence Sigachi’s stock plunged 15% and reignited debate over industrial safety, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector that plays a pivotal global role
