Sikkim, July 9, 2025 – The state has experienced its worst monsoon in five years, with a 35% rainfall deficit, raising serious concerns about climate imbalance and the increased risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
In response, a state-level disaster commission and scientific teams have launched surveys to monitor high-risk glacial lakes, assess vulnerable zones, and strengthen early warning systems. The move aims to safeguard communities living downstream from potential flash floods caused by unstable glacial lakes.
