Madurai Street Vendors Triple in Seven Years |

Madurai has witnessed a three-fold rise in street vendors, with numbers growing from around 6,000 in 2018 to nearly 19,549 in 2025.

While the boom highlights the city’s thriving informal economy, it also brings challenges such as traffic congestion, encroachment, and sanitation issues.

To address these, authorities are planning to elect a vending committee to regulate and formalize vending zones.The move aims to balance livelihoods with urban order and create a more sustainable city framework.
