No More FASTag from May 1? Here’s What the Government Says About Satellite-Based Tolling

Amid growing speculation about the end of FASTag from May 1, the government has clarified its position, putting rumors to rest. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated that FASTag will not be discontinued starting May 1, but new technologies are being tested to modernize the toll collection process.

One of the key developments in this direction is the introduction of a barrier-less tolling system using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) integrated with FASTag. This advanced system will be implemented on a pilot basis at selected toll plazas across the country. The goal is to reduce traffic congestion, ensure seamless travel, and lay the groundwork for a future where satellite-based toll collection could become a reality.

Officials confirmed that these trials are part of a long-term vision to create a more efficient and transparent tolling system that eliminates the need for physical barriers while ensuring accurate toll deduction.

For now, FASTag remains in operation, and drivers are advised to continue using their existing tags until further notice.
