In a landmark initiative, the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC), in collaboration with the Tribal Development Department, has launched a state-led Tribal Genome Mapping Project—the first of its kind in India. The project spans 17 districts and targets over 20 tribal communities, including the Sidi, Bhil, Gamit, and Rathwa.
So far, more than 4,158 biological samples have been collected, aiming to generate around 2,000 whole genome sequences. This pioneering initiative is designed to deepen scientific understanding of genetic health patterns, disease predisposition, and hereditary conditions prevalent in tribal groups.
The project will play a crucial role in tackling long-standing issues such as anemia, malnutrition, and unexplored genetic disorders among Gujarat’s indigenous populations. Experts believe the insights gained will significantly improve preventive healthcare, policy-making, and community-focused interventions.
This effort marks Gujarat as a frontrunner in combining science, healthcare, and tribal welfare for inclusive development.
