Journalism Then & Now: Nehru vs Today
During Nehru’s time, press freedom was considered an essential part of democracy. His monthly press conferences, letters to chief ministers, and writings reflected a leader who valued criticism and transparency.
Today, journalists face unprecedented challenges — job insecurity, contract-based work, selective censorship, and shrinking rights. Access to Parliament is restricted, national agencies like PTI and UNI are under financial pressure, and autonomous media institutions are losing independence.
PN Haksar once said, “Nehru’s humanism, secularism, and belief in scientific temper remain of continuing relevance.” Yet, the media landscape today feels far removed from the ideals of questioning, independent journalism that Nehru championed.
💬 Question:
Have we preserved the freedom of the press Nehru fought for, or are we witnessing a silent erosion of journalistic rights?
