In a landmark move for human rights, the Jharkhand High Court has ordered fresh judicial inquiries into 262 cases of custodial deaths.

A Division Bench led by Chief Justice MS Sonak criticized the state for previously allowing “Executive Magistrates” to handle these probes, violating the mandate that only “Judicial Magistrates” have such authority.

The court has set a six-month deadline for completion, signaling a zero-tolerance policy toward procedural lapses in sensitive human rights cases.
