Public health agencies are tightly monitoring a rare orthohantavirus cluster linked to a South Atlantic cruise ship (BRIEF, 2026). At least seven cases have been reported, resulting in three tragic deaths (BRIEF, 2026).

While hantaviruses typically transmit from infected rodents to humans through aerosolized excretions, authorities are thoroughly investigating the potential for human-to-human transmission in this specific strain (Iacobucci, 2026).

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reassured the public that the overall risk to the general population remains very low as strict infection controls and repatriation protocols take effect (Iacobucci, 2026).
