Goa “Legitimate Media” List Controversy: Independents Barred?

In Goa, a major debate has erupted over a new “Legitimate Media” list released by the Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ). The union approved a list of 35 recognized media organizations, aiming to regulate journalism and curb self-proclaimed reporters and unregistered portals. This move, however, excludes independent reporters, freelance cameramen, and journalists from smaller outlets from the GUJ voters’ list.

Critics fear this creates significant barriers, marginalizing independent voices essential for diverse coverage and challenging traditional media structures. The controversy centers on who defines a “working journalist” in the digital age.
