The Union Cabinet has approved the ₹23,731 crore National Unified GOBARdhan Scheme to accelerate the production of compressed biogas (CBG) from organic waste across India. The initiative aims to convert agricultural residue, cattle dung, municipal solid waste, and other biodegradable materials into clean energy, while promoting sustainable waste management and supporting the circular economy.

The scheme is expected to create employment opportunities, increase farmers’ income through waste utilization, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen India’s renewable energy ecosystem. The approval marks another significant step toward achieving cleaner energy, improved sanitation, and the country’s long-term environmental sustainability goals.
