Alwal, September 16: As part of the ‘Mee Suraksha–Sahachari’ initiative being conducted under the supervision of Malkajgiri Police Commissioner B. Sumathi, IPS, the Alwal police organised an awareness programme on drug abuse. The programme was held under the supervision of DCP C.H. Sridhar, with Begumpet ACP Gopalakrishnamurthy and EAGLE Team ACP Harichandra Reddy attending as chief guests.
Speaking on the occasion, EAGLE Team ACP Harichandra Reddy said parents should closely observe changes in the behaviour of children and youngsters who may be falling into drug use. He advised parents to pay attention not only to behavioural changes but also to how their children are obtaining money to purchase drugs. Early signs should not be ignored, and timely intervention can help prevent youngsters from slipping deeper into substance abuse.
He urged people to inform the police by calling 1908 if they come across drug use, sale or supply anywhere. The identity of those providing information would be kept confidential, he said.
Begumpet ACP Gopalakrishnamurthy said drug use, if it begins at a young age, could have a serious impact on the future of children and youngsters. What may initially appear to be a habit could gradually lead them into bad company and, in some cases, towards criminal activities. He stressed the need for parents to maintain close communication with their children and understand their problems rather than allowing them to deal with such influences on their own.
The recent POCSO case reported within the Alwal police station limits has also raised concerns over the dangers of substance abuse. According to details that emerged during the police investigation, the minor girl was allegedly introduced to intoxicating substances before she was sexually assaulted by several persons. Police have registered a POCSO case and are investigating the incident. The case highlights the need for greater vigilance over the company youngsters keep and the influences they are exposed to.
Drug abuse can affect not only the health and education of youngsters but also their decision-making, family relationships and future prospects. Preventing the problem at an early stage requires parents to recognise warning signs, maintain open communication with their children and report information about drug use or supply to the police.
