A major explosion at the Amona 220kV substation early Friday plunged several areas of Sanquelim and Valpoi into a grueling 12-hour blackout.

Triggered by a fierce mix of lightning, heavy pre-monsoon winds, and rain, a vital transformer caught fire and suffered extensive damage.

The blast wrecked critical infrastructure, destroying bus bars and insulators. Fire services safely contained the blaze, while nearly 90 electricity department personnel worked urgently to restore domestic lines by evening. However, full power supply to local industrial consumers will take a few more days.
